Our Calculation Methodology
How do we arrive at these numbers? Full transparency about our sources and assumptions.
Waste Calculation
Our waste calculation is based on the average weight per latex balloon (4.5 grams including ribbon and clip), multiplied by the number of balloons per decoration type. Latex balloons take 4+ years to degrade in the environment and are classified as plastic waste under the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive.
- Pillar: 37 balloons = 167 grams of waste per event
- Fountain: 11 balloons = 49.5 grams of waste per event
- Arch: 140 balloons = 630 grams of waste per event
- PilaMania: 0 kg operational waste across 50+ cycles
CO2 Calculation
The CO2 equivalents in our calculator cover the full lifecycle: production, transport, and waste processing. When helium is used, the additional emissions (0.005 kg CO2-eq per liter) are included. PilaMania values are amortized over the expected lifespan of 50 use cycles.
- Pillar disposable: 2.5 kg CO2-eq per event
- Fountain disposable: 1.8 kg CO2-eq per event
- PilaMania pillar: only 0.10 kg CO2-eq per event
- Source: WUR research and EU environmental data
Cost Calculation
The cost calculation compares the average market price per disposable decoration with PilaMania's one-time investment, divided by the expected number of use cycles (50+). Labor costs for inflating disposable balloons are not included, making PilaMania's real advantage even greater.
- Pillar disposable: €55 per event, PilaMania: €297 one-time
- Fountain disposable: €40 per event, PilaMania: €137 one-time
- Arch disposable: €140 per event, PilaMania: €497 one-time
- Break-even after just 3–5 events, then pure savings
- Labor savings not included (additional advantage)

Frequently Asked Questions About the Calculator
Answers to the most common questions about our calculations and methodology.
How reliable are these calculations?
The calculator is based on WUR research (Wageningen University & Research) and EU environmental data. The values are conservative estimates - actual savings are often higher because we don't include labor costs and indirect savings.
Can I use these figures in CSR reports?
Yes, the calculations follow accepted methodologies for CO2 equivalents and waste calculation. For official certifications we always recommend verification by a recognized body, but our figures provide a solid starting point.
How does PilaMania compare to other alternatives?
Paper decoration tears easily, fabric decoration is expensive and difficult to keep clean. PilaMania combines the visual impact of balloons with the sustainability of reusable - a unique position in the market.
What happens after the lifespan of PilaMania products?
PilaMania products are designed for 50+ use cycles. The weather-resistant PVC construction (-20°C to +60°C) does not degrade over time but through intensive use. After their lifespan, products can be recycled. We are working on a return program where old products are collected and processed into new materials.
What about transport costs and logistics?
Transport is a significant hidden cost factor not included in the calculator. Disposable decoration requires a new delivery of balloons, helium and accessories per event — often by a specialized decorator. PilaMania products are compactly stored at the customer's location and ready to use immediately, without repeated deliveries or heavy helium tanks. This saves not only costs but also CO₂ emissions from transport.
What is a CO₂ equivalent and how do you use it?
CO₂ equivalent (CO₂-eq) is a unit that makes the climate impact of different greenhouse gases comparable by converting them to the equivalent amount of CO₂. In the calculator we use CO₂-eq for the complete lifecycle of the decoration: production, transport and waste processing. That makes comparison fair — even if one decoration needs more transport and another more energy during production. The numbers in the calculator are conservative: the actual impact of disposable balloons is often higher due to incomplete waste processing.
How does this calculator position itself compared to other CO₂ tools?
Most CO₂ calculators measure how much emissions your organisation causes — think Milieu Centraal, Klimaatplein, Milieubarometer. Those tools have energy, transport and buildings as input. PilaMania's calculator does something different: it calculates the future savings of one specific product choice, compared to the alternative. Input: decoration frequency and product type. Output: waste saved + CO₂ avoided + euros gained + break-even moment. That makes it a decision support tool, not a measurement instrument. Use both: measure your total footprint with Milieu Centraal, use this calculator for the decoration choice.
How often do I need to invest in new PilaMania products?
The individual PVC balls last on average 50+ use cycles. With weekly use that is more than a year; with monthly use that is 4+ years. The carbon frame lasts significantly longer. In practice customers report 3-5 years of intensive use without needing replacement. If an individual ball gets damaged, only that one ball is replaceable — not the whole system. The calculator calculates with 50 cycles as a conservative assumption. If you use the products less intensively, the actual ROI is higher than the calculator indicates.
